Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sport
Sep 03 to Sep 04 Friday, April 30, 2010 to Saturday, September 4, 2010
Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sport Artists: Matthew Barney, Mark Bradford, Marcelino Gonçalves, Lyle Ashton Harris, Brian Jungen, Kurt Kauper, Shaun El C. Leonardo, Kori Newkirk, Catherine Opie, Paul Pfeiffer, Marco Rios, Collier Schorr, Joe Sola, Sam Taylor-Wood, Hank Willis Thomas Curator: Christopher Bedford Medium: Mixed Media Gallery: All
Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sports, is an exhibition about contemporary art that deals with the subject of the male athlete. This particular artistic theme has become increasingly prevalent during the past several years, building upon several decades of discourse about identity and gender. Including artists ranging from such well-known individuals as Matthew Barney, Catherine Opie, Collier Schorr, and Sam Taylor-Wood to emerging talents such as Shaun El C. Leonardo and Joe Sola, Mixed Signals demonstrates that the male athlete is a far more ambiguous, polyvalent figure in our collective cultural imagination than ever before.

/Kristine Thoreson - Rural Roots
Sep 03 to Sep 30 /STRIDE +15 WINDOW EPCOR CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, 205 8 AVENUE SOUTHEAST
/EXHIBITION AUGUST & SEPTEMBER 2010.
/RECEPTION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2010. 7PM - 8PM.
/DETAILS This photographic blog project explores the idea of blurred boundaries and reflects the nature of my own identity as the product of both rural and urban influences. Restless and sometimes fearful in the city, yet overwhelmed by feelings of isolation in rural areas, I often feel unsettled in my own hometown. This past spring, I repeatedly traveled to the “borderlands” of Calgary to explore regions where rural and urban living seem to overlap. With this project, my goal is to inspire conversation around the idea of borderlands in Calgary and elsewhere, and to invite conversation about notions of identity, roots and “home.”

Battleship Down
Sep 03 to Sep 29 TRUCK Contemporary Art presents:
Battleship Down
SHOWCASING WORK BY
Randy Niessen (Calgary, AB)
Randy Niessen’s site specific installations are formal explorations created through a hybrid of painting, print media, and sculpture. These installations play with the tension between art and environment, materials and space, as well as reality and illusion. In the abstract of a sinking ship, Battleship Down is an explosive scene of geometric shapes and colour. Fire, water, and light are represented by paint and string erupting around an abstract dreadnought engulfed in its own environment.
Dates: August 5 to September 29, 2010 Closing Reception: Thursday, September 16, 2010 @ 7:00 PM at the Window Space
Where: The +15 Window Space is located on the second level of the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts at 205-8 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB. The closing reception for Battleship will run from 7 to 8 PM at the window space.
The reception and show will be open to the public. Attendance is free.

Life in the 2 Field
Sep 10 to Oct 07 TRUCK Contemporary Art presents:
Life in the 2 field
SHOWCASING WORK BY
Robyn Moody (Calgary, AB)
Life in the 2 field will turn TRUCK's main gallery into a living drawing. In drawn animation, there are a number of different fields used for different effects. In a small field - the # 2 field, small differences in successive drawings are amplified when enlarged or projected on a large screen. Lines delineating a room, for example, have a tendency to wave wildly. Simple mechanical cams and levers will be used to initiate waves in the cords, animating the "drawing" of the room.
Dates: September 10 to October 7, 2010 Opening reception: Friday, September 10, 2010 @ 8:00 PM in the Main Space Where: TRUCK Contemporary Art, 815 First Street SW, lower level of the Grain Exchange Building
Artists will be in attendance and the reception and show will be open to the public. Attendance is free.

NOMADS - France Jodoin
Oct 21 to Nov 20 "Nomads" will feature new works by France Jodoin. Jodoin has an exceptionally popular legacy of beautifully impassioned paintings.
The artist's work is inspired by her own reflections of time an space and has in the past portrayed abstracted seascapes that are both whimsical and richly theatrical.
The artist says she is looking "to create a recognizable but imaginary geography, focusing on the large and small spaces that exist between the sea and sky that suggest infinity."
