Kent Monkman: The Triumph of Mischief
Sep 03 to Oct 12 Kent Monkman is a Toronto-based artist of Cree and Irish ancestry. He produces work in a variety of media, including painting, video, film, photography, sculpture, installation, and performance. Monkman draws inspiration from the histories depicted in 19th century art, including photography and Romantic painting, colonial portrayals of Aboriginal peoples and cinematic genres such as classic Hollywood westerns. Using these conventions, he constructs new stories through images that take into account missing narratives and perspectives of Aboriginal peoples.

Emily Carr: On the Edge of Nowhere
Sep 03 to May 31 Although Emily Carr described herself as an “isolated little old woman on the edge of nowhere” her work has an appeal that is universal in its expressive messages. With this exhibition, the AGGV will become the premiere destination on Vancouver Island to visit and learn about Emily Carr through her paintings. On the Edge of Nowhere will include an historical survey of Carr’s artistic career, featuring pieces in all the media and styles she explored and perfected. It will also focus on Carr’s influences and inspirations, such as European modern art, members of the Group of Seven artists, First Nations artists, Carr’s spirituality, and her interest in developing an art that speaks of her personal experience and her connection to the West Coast landscape.

Art from Scratch
Oct 01 to Nov 30 Maria Kaltio local artist from Sooke, B.C. My mom started quilting when I was a teenager and made quilts for everyone..... except me. I hounded her to make me one for years until finally on my 25th birthday she presented me with a gift..... a second hand Phaff sewing machine (that I still use today) and suggested that I should make my own. That gift was a passion for quilting and textile arts, and something that she and I now share. I take classes and workshops as often as I can and still feel like a beginner (after 12 years of practice) when in the company of more experienced quilters. My designs are often inspired by the fabrics I choose which tend to have an Asian influence, or a strong graphic feel. I love to create my own designs and finish with free motion machine quilting.
Patrice Plank local artist from Victoria, B.C.
Scratch art is a unique art form using scratchboard. Scratchboard is a wooden panel coated with a layer of white clay and then sprayed with a layer of black India ink. It was developed for the professional scratch artist.
The original design is lightly scratched into the black ink surface using very delicate tools; concentrating on lights and darks until the desired effect is achieved. Each image is literally thousands of scratches allowing for precise detail and control of lines, enabling the artist to bring the piece to life. The picture can then be painted with acrylics or watercolors etc, or left as a black and white.
This is a free event everyone is welcome!
