Alicja Swiatlon, "Calgary Sky Painting-March morning," 2018
acrylic on canvas, 30" x 40''
Alicja Swiatlon’s paintings are studies of colour, inspired by nature and brought into minimal and abstract form. The initial ideas always come from the experience of the world: it can be the vastness and colour of the spectacular Alberta skies observed during different seasons and nights or the fascinating northern lights. Other paintings are inspired by the South African sun and ocean where the Artist lived before she moved to Canada. The phenomena of the light is also one of Alicja’s painting explorations. How to express something so immaterial as light onto a material canvas.
Alicja Swiatlon’s paintings are an amazing experience of colour. She developed an outstanding technique of blending acrylic paint using brushes and paint with no mediums as she wants the colour to be as pure as possible. Its transformation can take weeks, layer by layer, until the expected deepness appears. The artists often prepares canvases using her own special technique and she also uses pigments to make her own paint. The result is the painting with very deep, velvet like colour. Alicja enjoys working in huge scale so that these fragments of the world, which the artist observes every day, are transformed into macro studies of colour.
