Donald Smith, also known as Lord Strathcona, married Isabella Sophia Hardisty of English, Scottish and Cree parentage. In 1895 the couple returned briefly to Smith's native home of Scotland. Isabella became very lonely and home sick for Canada. To help ease her depression and longing for her homeland, he had a lake – Glencoe Lochan, made for her, surrounded with a forest of trans-planted trees from Canada.
