BEAU DICK Early Works Exhibition and Book Launch for Beau Dick: Devoured by Consumerism
Opening reception and book launch: Friday, March 29th, 6-8 PM
Early Works includes thirteen previously unexhibited masks and objects created between 1979 and 1980 when Dick was in his early twenties. It is rare to view such a coherent grouping of works from this period, partly because Dick did not adhere exclusively to the conventions of the art market, often bypassing the gallery system by selling directly to private collectors. As a result, a surprising number of his sculptures have not yet had a public or discursive reception. This exhibition affords us the opportunity to contemplate a seminal moment in Beau Dick’s artistic development and to consider these works alongside the significant oeuvre which proceeds them. As a collection, these artworks form a complex portrait of a young artist’s attainment of a remarkably high level of virtuosity and stylistic diversity.

On March 29th, we will be launching a new publication that was produced in collaboration with Figure 1 Publishing to coincide with the exhibition of the same name that opened at White Columns, NY on March 15th. Full-colour photographs of Beau’s works are supported by contextual information and insights from his apprentices and friends, Wayne Alfred, Cole Speck, and Alan Hunt. Essays by LaTiesha Fazakas, John Cussans, and Candice Hopkins examine the continued impact of Beau’s art and life.
