Fine art photographer Bob Leier was born and raised in Saskatchewan. He studied Radio and Television production in Calgary before moving to Vancouver in 1972, where he provided marketing and communications services for large corporations and international events such as EXPO 86 and the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.
Subsequently, a stint working up North through the winter months proved to be a creative catalyst that challenged Leier to rediscover and redefine his passion for photography. Initially inspired by the North’s isolated and unique landscapes, he began to experiment and his photography evolved into highly graphic imagery that offered a fresh and unique perspective.
As Leier says, “Photo manipulation explores reality: enhancing it, expanding its boundaries and allowing us to experience it with new eyes. Image alteration yields fresh and unique perspectives. Whether simple or complicated, transforming the common and everyday into the unexpected produces unique visual effects. We find comfort in what we know, but deviating from the norm brings us to attention, compelling us to see reality with a different eye. Manipulation invites viewer interaction. Standing in contrast to representational photography, subjective imagery reshapes the familiar, offering surprises that are both dramatic and intriguing.”
