The first ever combined showing of two outstanding Manitoba artists - two generations, father and daughter. Robert Bruce and Katharine Bruce show a great passion for nature while adhering to a strong discipline of artistic creativity.
Both embrace the traditions of art while pushing the boundaries in their own ways. Known for their brilliant, bold evocative abstracts and landscapes, each has produced a body of work unique unto themselves yet showing a familiar spiritual thread.
Robert Bruce (1911 - 1980) was born in Grandview, MB and grew up in Winnipeg. He attended the School of Art and spent years painting in Europe. He became a war artist, after which he attended The Art Students League in New York. He became a successful illustrator, muralist, printmaker, painter and passionate teacher at the School of Art, University of Manitoba. He retired from teaching in 1976, spending time between Canada and Mexico where he died in 1980.
Katharine Bruce is New York born and prairie raised. A contemporary artist, she studied at UofM with her father. Later while living in the USA, she attended The Boston Museum School. Her work has evolved over the years from the traditional art form resulting in the cityscapes, landscapes and abstract works that she is well known for. Katharine divides her time between her homes in Holmfield, Manitoba and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
