Artist Talk on Thursday, December 20 at 2pm.
Artists in this exhibition were asked to reflect upon the things that help us navigate the darkness, especially as northern residents where mid-winter only allows us few fleeting hours of daylight. Digital media artists Ana Bayona and Hector C. Alzate Ramirez collaborate to explore how humans are attracted to a central fire, while Daryl Kehler in collaboration with Eric Kutschker invite viewers into an experiment in light pollution. 2D artists Frieda Martin, Valerie Rogers and Tatianna O’Donnell integrate light into their works showing ways to break through darkness, and sculptors Lori Talerico and Elizabeth Pattie consider mid-winter rituals in their stories. Digital artist Alex Jensen offers a large-scale projection of eternal sunrises and sunsets. Together the works will illuminate visitors in the many ways we both resist and embrace the dark.
The Dark Nights exhibition also features a special White Lights Studio Tour on Saturday, November 24. This self-guided tour of 12 local studios is enlightening and interactive, and features an exclusive reception at the end of the day at the Art Gallery with door prizes donated by the participating artists. Tickets are $10 and available at the Art Gallery and Salmon Arm Stationery.
The Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 4pm, and open until 7pm on Thursdays throughout the exhibition. Admission is by donation.
