As Is includes many works by the artist such as Puck, Excavator, Bus stop, and Shopping cart. Each of these paintings is equally about the subject and the resulting object. They represent a dialogue in the artist’s own exploration of the two. The beginning point is being mindful of a subject in domestic activities. His choices have their own subjective connections for him. His view is to be present and open. The objects and scenes are to be presented with an honest direct accounting of the process. The basic idea of beginning with a three-dimensional subject, to the work on a two-dimensional surface, is a distillation of information and process. The representational nature of the subject on a two-dimensional surface has kept him exploring. With a surface of canvas or panel, Fraser presents them as is.
Following four years studying graphic design and illustration at the Alberta College of Art & Design, Fraser moved to New York, attaining an MFA from the School of Visual Arts. An award-winning illustrator for 30 years, Fraser's clients included The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Mother Jones,Motor Trend, IBM, NFL, NHL, and Levis. In the 90s he moved to Calgary where he taught at his alma mater, ACAD. Fraser now lives and works in Victoria, where he has developed a body of work linking artistic influences such as pop, abstract and figurative art with personal observations. He states the concepts of his work as an affirmative declaration.
