Elaine Freedman – A Moment: Portraits of Women
to
Esplanade Art Gallery 401 First Street SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 8W2
Elaine Freedman’s portraits embrace a diversity of women in the Medicine Hat area and around the world in this series of 70 photographic works. Most are the results of only fleeting contact, while some are portraits of people she has known for many years. Freedman subtly manipulates the backgrounds in relation to the sitter, and notes that the series has developed over the past five years from desaturated, pastel prints to more dramatically-lit images with saturated colour.
Elaine comments: “With the recent media attention toward issues of safety and pay equity in the workplace for women, this body of work, which was started five years ago, is very timely… Capturing a moment in the lives of these remarkable women is such a small part of who they are. It was a very enriching experience to photograph these women and I especially enjoyed spending a moment with a complete stranger and connecting with them through my camera.”
After early work in fibre arts, Elaine studied Visual Communications at Medicine Hat College, and now develops and maintains her photography practice through intensive workshops and active membership in the Medicine Hat Photography Club and the Victoria Camera Club. Her work has consistently won top awards through both clubs, regionally and provincially. She has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions in Alberta and British Columbia over the past decade.
