Müller and Satzewich have created a kinetic wooden sculpture of La Chasse-Galerie or The Bewitched Canoe by Quebec writer Honoré Beaugrand. The perpetually paddling canoe reminds us of the Quebec folk tale in which a group of debaucherous woodsmen break a pact with the devil and are forced to paddle the night sky above Montreal every New Years Eve for eternity. In the sculptural exploration of the legend, the fragile gears that power the woodsmen examine a dialect between the mechanized forward motion and a Sisyphean cyclicism of all myth and storytelling.
Richard Muller is a Canadian artist currently completing a postgraduate degree in Fine Art Media at University College London's Slade School of Fine art in London, United Kingdom. Previously attending Concordia University with a concentration on Drawing and Painting, showing predominantly in Montreal and Toronto. Muller's practice is concerned with systems of order and logic that all viewers bring to art via the phenomenology act of perception.
Lucy Satzewich is a craft artist specializing in woodworking and fabric arts, based in Toronto, Ontario. She draws from her past in Theater and her background in fine woodworking to explore ways of creating and transforming space.
