Forces of Nature: Northwest Coast Indigenous Jewellery
Titled Forces of Nature, this upcoming jewellery exhibition is based on the rugged environment of the Pacific Northwest. Riptides, earthquakes, landslides, and windstorms are just some of the forces present along the Northwest Coast that challenge local populations but also spark creativity. Lattimer Gallery has asked a wide variety of jewellers throughout the region to look beyond convention and to create pieces that reflect the natural wonders of British Columbia, Washington State, and Alaska. While sterling silver is the most common material used in the production of hand-engraved Indigenous jewellery, this show includes pieces that also incorporate shell, copper, precious metals, and gems. Featuring the hand-engraved work of over fifteen jewellers, participating artists include Morgan Asoyuf (Ts’msyen), Shawn Edenshaw (Haida/Gitxsan), Corrine Hunt (Kwakwaka’wakw/Tlingit), David Neel (Kwakwaka’wakw), and Jennifer Younger (Tlingit).
A preview of the show will be available online Friday, September 28th, and the pieces will be available for sale online Saturday, September 29th at 10am. The exhibition runs from September 29th to October 13th. Lattimer Gallery will be hosting an opening for the show from 5pm-7pm on Saturday, September 29th. Artists will be in attendance and refreshments will be served. We look forward to seeing to you all and are excited to be presenting these prime examples of Northwest Coast innovation.
