Franc gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Hank Bull, in conjunction with the artist’s cross-Canada exhibition tour Connexion, now showing at the Burnaby Art Gallery.
The works take the character of the cardboard box, one that is ubiquitous and well-travelled, and explore its language through a series of mediated transformations. Bull dresses the box in the forms of photography, painting, sculpture, and theatre. These multiple instances allow for comparison, unveiling the attributes that are essential to the iterative object itself. The forms play with the usefulness of the object, opening access to aspects in some that are barred from the viewer in others. This recyclable structure of transportation and storage, made specific by the artist’s precise colour choices and the modernist form-sensitive grids, takes on a vibrancy that is to be found in the stuff of everyday life. The palimpsests of their past use, seen in blankness, size and structure, pull at our desire with their negative capabilities, and their recalcitrance towards their global capitalist origins.
