Illingworth Kerr Gallery 1407 14 Ave NW, Alberta University of the Arts, Calgary, Alberta T2N 4R3
IKG LIVE is a three-day festival dedicated to live art that takes place at the Alberta College of Art + Design's Illingworth Kerr Gallery (IKG). Organized by Lorenzo Fusi, Visiting Academic Curator, up to 15 artists or artist collectives are selected through a regional open call for submissions. The selected artists were invited to take part in a weekend seminar/conversation/workshop to discuss their proposals with other artists and mentors including ACAD Faculty and Curators from the Esker Foundation and Contemporary Calgary. These sessions were intended to build community and discuss ideas in advance of the festival.
Live art can encompass many different activities including happenings and actions, performance, physical theatre, and dance. Each day includes multiple live performances that will be staged at the IKG, one after the other or simultaneously. IKG Live offers a platform and stage for regional artists, whose practice actively engages, challenges and questions the notion of temporality within the exhibition context, to showcase their work.
This year, each day will be concluded with a keynote performance conceived by three international artists (evening programme). In addition, a committee (consisting of IKG staff, mentors, keynote performers, and sponsors) will award one of the open call presentationswith $3,000.
In the first iteration of IKG LIVE, Terrance Houle and Cobra Collins were awarded this prize for their performance entitled iitahwáákomímmotsiiyo’p: what makes us love each other, whilst Stacey Cann received a special mention for her durational performance, tally. The former Awardee’s, Terrance Houle and Cobra Collins will introduce the award with a short performance on Saturday, January 13.
