Jimmy Wright 1937-2008S
Stunning dark royal blues collide with the bright mass of this charming polar bear. The fresh simple composition of this work is typical of Wright's oeuvre, and the gallery team have been particularly charmed with the bright clean line used for this bear's ears! Fresh from a private collection, the Jimmy Wright estate has estimated that this artwork is from circa 1996. It is pleasing to see so many 'Wright-isms' in this piece with his signature equations energetically placed around the bear.
Speaking to Robert Amos in the early 2000's, Wright remarked on building up his backgrounds: "The more time you scratch at 'em, the more you build up the surface, you're just enhancing it," he insisted. "You're creating that wonderful textured wall that you’re gonna drop your icon on."
