Digital Stories from International Buffalo Treaty
This work is the result of Tasha Hubbard’s collaborative work with Leroy Little Bear and Amethyst First Rider, which will eventually culminate in a Buffalo Story Archive in support of the International Buffalo Treaty’s goals, including raising buffalo consciousness amongst the people.
The first piece is the story of why Mistawasis Cree Nation decided to become a signatory of the International Buffalo Treaty, which is a treaty between Indigenous peoples across the northern plains. Signatories agree to a cooperating together, renewing relationships to the buffalo and ultimately restoring them to the land.
The second is a work in progress about 87 buffalo living in Elk Island National Park now returning to their ancestral home in Blackfeet territory. The herd started in the nineteenth century as calves taken to Salish Kootenai territory during the buffalo slaughter. After forty years of safety, they were eventually were sold to the Canadian government and remained at Elk Island for over a hundred years. Now, their descendants are being welcomed back with song and ceremony.
