Marianne Watchel, “A Walking Shadow,” 2018
acrylic on canvas, 48" x 60”
I needed a key change. To set aside intense colour and heavily textured surfaces for awhile. To simplify and focus on tone.
- Marianne Watchel
For those familiar with Marianne Watchel's approach to abstraction, these paintings present an intriguing shift. From a viewer perspective, the shift of trajectory is simultaneously limiting and expansive: sealed surfaces take deeper breaths and tone establishes the ground for the paintings and is arguably, a conceptual key into the work.
Marianne Watchel was born in rural Saskatchewan and studied painting at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. In the early 1980's she began painting full time. She attended the Emma Lake Artist Workshops in 1983, 1987 and 1988. Her work is in many private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States and Australia.
