“From grief and desperation to joy and jubilation, these photographs tell those stories with respect and class. Another fantastic retrospective of the year in Canadian Photojournalism.” Cole Burston, NPAC President.
The News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) is pleased to recognize the excellence represented by Canada’s most outstanding photojournalists in presenting the finalists in the 11th annual National Pictures of the Year (NPOY) awards competition. The exhibition was selected from the over 2,000 photographs and 25 multimedia productions from across Canada that were entered in this year’s competition, showcasing the talent, insight and creative storytelling produced by Canadian photojournalists in 2017.
In this fascinating and important collection of work, the public will get a chance to see firsthand the images that held our attention over the last year, combining the creativity of the well-crafted photograph with the socially and historically important stories that they tell. These images transcend language and cultural barriers and speak to our basic human condition. A great photo is a moment of time that can reveal the world’s most profound tales of heartbreak, joy and reality with a single, iconic image.
This exhibition is part of Vancouver’s 2018 Capture Photography Festival. It will travel to Toronto for the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival from May 7-19. The winners of each category, the 2017 Student Photographer of the Year, the 2017 Student Multimedia of the Year, the 2017 Photojournalist of the Year and the 2017 Photograph of the Year will be announced during the 2017 National Pictures of the Year Gala event to be held on April 28th, 2018. The nominated photographs can be viewed online at www.npac.ca
