Celebrate the opening of our contemporary textile art exhibitions! A panel discussion with Connecting Threads artists Roxanne Charles, Bettina Matzkhun, and Ruth Scheuing will start at 1:30pm; reception follows at 2:30pm.
Surrey Art Gallery is pleased to announce their first of four textile-themed exhibits this fall: The Art of Warmth by Peace Arch Weavers and Spinners Guild.
Enjoy the variety of works that Surrey’s talented artists and artisans can make with fibre! Back for another season, the Peace Arch Weavers and Spinners Guild enliven the Surrey Arts Centre with their vibrant, cozy textiles that beckon you to come in from the fall breeze outside. Through felting, knitting, hand spinning, and weaving, Guild members create an abundance of beloved items for the home and the wardrobe. Artworks span the full range of the medium, from traditional items such as Coast Salish blankets and silk scarves to elaborate tapestries and even a vest made entirely of dog hair! Each garment, accessory, and decoration is made by hand using both classical and modern techniques.
Assistant curator Rhys Edwards says, “We’re focussing on textile art this fall through three curated exhibits, but we also want to show how local artists interact with this medium. The Art of Warmth: Peace Arch Weavers and Spinners Guild complement the other exhibits in highlighting more of the functional and decorative side of contemporary textile art.”
The other three textile exhibits will launch September 23: Connecting Threads featuring 20+ artworks drawn from the Gallery’s permanent collection; Maggie Orth’s interactive colour-changing quilts in Moving Towards Stillness; and Kathy Slade’s pop culture-infused images and objects in This is a chord. This is another.

About Peace Arch Weavers and Spinners Guild
The Peace Arch Weavers and Spinners Guild is a local organization that celebrates weaving, spinning, dyeing, basketry, felting, and knitting. The Guild was founded in 1966 and is currently based at the Museum of Surrey, where members volunteer for the Textile department. At monthly meetings, Guild members cultivate their love of designing and crafting a variety of textiles that start with fibre, yarn, or other materials through workshops with local and international instructors, talks, and other programs. Each November, the Guild also holds an annual showcase of purchasable items and demonstrations at Fibre Flare held at South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre.
Admission to all exhibitions and events is free unless otherwise noted (donations gratefully accepted).
