Randy Warren - SILENT SENTINELS: LANDSCAPES & CITYSCAPES
to
Wayne Arthur Gallery 186 Provencher Blvd, Winnipeg, Manitoba R2H 0G3
About the Show:
I was inspired to compile a series of paintings of landscapes with either a rural or urban setting. I have lived in Winnipeg for almost thirty years and grew up in a rural setting until I was in my early twenties. I began painting night scenes of Winnipeg when I first moved here. The calm and serene quality of the buildings and streets at night was reminiscent of the country pace of life I was accustomed to.
I chose recognizable buildings in the city and began to think about the history they had witnessed over the years. The rural landscapes, although juxtaposed with their city counterparts by both location and time of day, also bear silent witness to history. Whether it’s a lonely fencepost in a field or a deserted street at night, each painting has its own silent sentinel bearing witness to an unspoken history.
About the Artist:
Randy Warren was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada and grew up beside a lake. It was here he began to draw animals and waterfowl. After graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of fine arts degree he began sculpting at a bronze foundry where his portraits, scenic design and pattern work can be seen across North America. He was juried into the Society of Animal artists of North America in 2012. Later he would have a carving of a Canada goose entered into the Ward World waterfowl competition in Maine. Randy carves, paints and etches with an emphasis on bringing attention to our vanishing North American wildlife.
