Please join us for the opening of “Alternate Sights” on April 12, 2018 at 6pm with artists and curators in attendance. Part of the selected program for Capture Photography Festival, this exhibition offers a critical eye onto the ways in which visual perception informs the basis of our conception of the world, by presenting works that play with our expectations of the referent image. Here, expectations are defied through two iterations of expanded photography.
Through works by Vancouver-based artist Scott Massey and Montreal-based artist Léna Mill-Reuillard, Alternate Sights draws connections between immersive media installations, Vancouver’s history in photoconceptual art, Canadian experimental cinema, and the changing ecology of working spaces toward an understanding of expanded photography and its corporeal experience. Mill-Reuillard’s and Massey’s works peel apart our expectations of what we think we will see: navigating a fine line between images, spaces, and temporality and drawing attention to psychological tricks to the mind.
Scott Massey has recently presented solo exhibitions at Dazibao (Montreal), Gallery 44 (Toronto), Vu Photo (Québec) and Charles H. Scott Gallery, among many others. Léna Mill-Reuillard is travelling to Vancouver for this first exhibition of her work outside of Québec, where she has presented solo exhibitions at La Bande Vidéo, Vu Photo (Québec), Sporobole (Sherbrooke), and Dazibao (Montreal).
