Experiencing her surroundings, from large metropolitan centers to remote natural places, is an integral part of Sheila Kernan’s painting process. She is an avid photographer, and the pictures of her trips in Canada, the United States and Japan are an important source of inspiration.
Her energetic renditions of urban and rural landscapes are evident proof of her excitement while translating her experiences onto canvas. “Direct translation,” says Kernan, “is not what I am after when I paint. Rather, I am interested in how personal interpretations of the world can transform into paint [...] I want people to be excited by what they see and to let their imagination fill in the gaps.”
