The Arctic: Real and Imagined Views from the Nineteenth Century
Artworks depicting 16 separate Arctic expeditions between 1818 and 1876 contributed to near-mythical ideas about the far north. This exhibition examines the enduring colonial iconography of Canada’s North as a byproduct of the age of British Arctic expansion. Inuit cultural consultants, Sophia Lebessis and James Kuptana, provide an Inuit perspective on the content and themes that are addressed in the exhibition, which includes both Indigenous and European artifacts to provide added context and a sense of reality to the world depicted in these nineteenth century artworks - a world in which the real was often indistinguishable from the imagined.
