The Ferry Building Gallery, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico, is pleased to present, The Mayan Dress Code: Legacy and Continuity in Chiapas, Mexico, an exhibition combining textiles from Chiapas with photography by Cisco Dietz showcasing the artisans and Maya people.
Textiles have been part of a complex communication system through different cultures, thus clothing forms part of women ́s regional identity in the Mayan area, where each indigenous group has a distinctive dress, colours and intricate designs that adorn the blouses, or huipiles. Dressing is a form of identification and identity among Maya women, and those characteristics are distinctive between towns in the Maya region. This exhibit unites textiles, both traditional and modern, and pictures of contemporary Maya people of Chiapas, Mexico.
Join archeologist and curator Fabiola Sanchez on Sunday, September 16 from 2–4 p.m. as she delves into the rich history of Mayan weaving and examines the way in which traditional textiles have been part of a complex, ever-evolving communication system that has been passed down through generations.
