Over the course of their careers photographers Douglas Curran, Robert E. von Sternberg and Michael Mitchell have brought attention to the use of landscape in tourist settings. In Curran’s 1985 images tourists shop, sight-see, take photographs and join bus tours with the leading visual difference between then and now, being the styles of attire and vehicular designs. Mitchell’s 1986 Ekta colour prints attend to the preparation undertaken by Parks Canada, local hotels and businesses to accommodate and promote the growing tourism industry. Von Sternberg’s 2017 images turn our attention to the Columbia Icefields where tourists continue to tour the wounded remnants of this once massive water source.
