Meet the artists
Patrick McCloskey & Heather Walter (Canmore) Partners in life and work for more than 20 years, Patrick and Heather have been telling stories through video, photography and writing from their home base in Canmore. Previous to that, Patrick’s career began in multi-media productions for national parks, historic sites and museums in Canada and internationally. His passion for photography has taken him around the world with international organizations and non-profit groups, as well as for personal exploration. His work has appeared in magazines and books, and several exhibitions in the Bow Valley, including at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. When they met, Heather was living in Newfoundland where she worked as an environmental educator and author, and music performer with guitarist / composer, Eric West. Since moving to Alberta she and Patrick have combined their strengths, working together in video production and other creative pursuits. Heather’s longstanding love of Fogo Island began on her first visit there in the early 1980s when she performed with Eric at the Brimstone Head Folk Festival. She has been back many times since. It didn’t take much to convince Patrick to go with her. We are very grateful for the opportunity that the residency provided to delve deeper into life on Fogo, and to meet many of the people who have helped the island prosper over the past decades.
Barb Fyvie (Canmore) Born in Calgary, Barb Fyvie moved to Canmore in 2005. She completed her BFA at the University of Alberta in 1984 and has worked in advertising, design and education while running her painting studio practice over the past 20 years. She was awarded an Artist Residency in Tilting on Fogo Island, Newfoundland in 2015 and 2017. In 2015, she was awarded a Public Art Commission by The Town of Canmore. Barb is currently represented by the Grant Berg Gallery in Grande Prairie and the Berg Gallery in Kananaskis Village, Alberta. Her work can also be found in collections across Canada, and in the U.S. and Europe.
Alison Masters (Creston, BC) Alison’s first exhibition experiences were at the Leighton Center and the Max Bell Theatre in Banff in 1993. She still does most of her painting outdoors. What has evolved is the importance of line, the complexity of underpainting and the increasing size of her work. She frequently works over old paintings, allowing some of the old surface to remain. This creates unexpected, exciting possibilities, as if the painting is participating in the final outcome. Alison received a Master’s degree in nursing, and became an artist in Creston, B.C. after a few adult education courses and many hours painting on location. She has had solo shows at Center 64 in Kimberley, BC, and the Crowsnest Public Art Gallery in Blairmore. In 2012, filmmaker Richard Reeves animated 35 of her paintings from Spain. Her artwork has been used many times for ArtWalk, Garden Festival, and Quilt festival posters, a wine bottle label and a CD cover and insert. Current projects include working-up sketches from Tilting NFLD and painting on-site at a greenhouse in Creston.
