Inuit Gallery of Vancouver 120 Carrie Cates Court, North Vancouver, British Columbia V7M 0G7
The Inuit Gallery is pleased to present a collection of vintage art works by Inuit artists from communities across the Arctic. The Inuit started carving stone sculpture for the southern market in the 1950s, with the burgeoning of such creation starting in the 1960s. Our collection has a range of works including Inuit involved in traditional activities, dolls, and animal figures all ranging between the late 1950s up to the 1990s.
Most of the work in the collection are smaller and medium sized pieces, though there are a few larger works, such as Eliyakota Samaualie's serenely elegant Preening Snow Goose, and an early Ookpik Pitsiulak serpentine Owl. This year we also have a beautiful ceramic work from Rankin Inlet – Paul Ullulaq's Flying Geese Pot – as well as two Inuit collectors' dolls from the 1970s, one with a carved stone face and the other with a face carved from antler, and two Beaded Women by Eva Talooki Aliktaluk.
In addition, there is a wonderful Spirit Figure with antlersc. 1970s by Josiah Nuilalik, an artist well known for his shamanic transformations, an elaborate Camp Scene with an Igloo, sled and figures, as well as four lovely miniatures from Povungnituk, Mark Panopy's Drum Dancers, and three early George Arluks.
Please take time to enjoy the entire collection. We look forward to discussing these works with you.
All works are available immediately.
