Opening Reception: April 11th, 7pm
The show features the posthumous work of Elvis Antoine (Sunke Sapa Hdeshka – Black Spotted Horse), a celebrated Dakota painter whose legacy continues to grow, and Greg Fritz, a self-taught Winnipeg-based Cree stone carver exhibiting commercially for the first time.
This powerful exhibition offers a unique pairing of two deeply personal and expressive art practices; one, a posthumous celebration of a renowned Plains painter, the other, a quiet unveiling of stone carvings never before shared commercially.
Elvis Antoine (1957 to 2023) of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation created paintings that reflect the vastness and spirit of the Prairies. His work has received growing recognition, including a 2023 installation in the Senate of Canada and a major 2024 exhibition at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. The works are from the private collection of Jon and Naomi Gerrard of Winnipeg. Jon Gerrard will speak at the opening reception at approximately 7:00 PM.
Greg Fritz, a Winnipeg-based carver, creates evocative soapstone sculptures using only hand tools. A self-taught artist who discovered his Cree ancestry later in life, Greg approaches each piece with care and spiritual reflection. His work was recently honoured at the 2024 Annual International Representational Exhibition (AIRE).
