Against the Current: Orca + Salmon
This multi-media event, initiated by the SSAC, and inspired by Orca Soundings, will engage the Salt Spring community and school youth in learning and deepening their understanding of Art and the Environment, specifically Orca and Salmon. Art in the hall will inform the workshops and talks and offer participants the opportunity to explore their thoughts, feelings and actions related to our changing natural environment with a focus on Orca & Salmon.
Artists in the exhibit include Karin Beviere, Matteo Bishop, Paul Burke, Anna Gustafson, Quentin Harris, Tracy Harrison, Joyce Majiski, Jane MacKenzie, Quinn Masselink, Briony Penn, Natasha Van Netten, Meave Wilde, Mr. Lightfoot’s 2018/19 Grade 5 class, Salt Sping Centre school students, many students in all elementary and middle schools on Salt Spring.
Art created by youth and the community will be an important accumulative component of the event. Come and learn about our Southern Resident Killer Whale population and how artists have responded to their predicament.
February 14 at 7pm at Mahon Hall: Opening night of Against the Current: Orca+Salmon will feature a showing of the documentary film To the Orca, With Love. Directed by Natalie Lucien and with Rob Stewart, David Suzuki, Paul Spong, Alexandra Morton. Its Valentines Day, lets show the Southern Resident Orcas our love! 7pm at Mahon Hall – $10 at the door. What we do to nature, we do to ourselves.

Salmon Stencils by Quentin Harris – Participatory Art Making – daily – Add your art to the exhibit! Come and color or write poetry on a chinook salmon and offer it to the Orcas.
Talks
Tuesday, Feb. 18 from 5:30-7pm – Let the Herring Live – Join us in partnership with Pacific Wild to welcome Hereditary Chief of Tsawout Erick Pelkey and Marine Science Specialist Vanessa Minke-Martin in their talk on herring. They will discuss the restoration of the Salish Sea’s distinct herring populations in order to bring vitality back to communities for whom herring was a foundational species. This includes the effect this has on our Southern Resident Orca population who feed on Chinook Salmon who in turn feed on the herring. Exhibit runs from 10-5pm that day.
Thursday, Feb. 20 from 5:30-7pm – Cetacea – Join us during the Against the Current: Orca+Salmon exhibit to hear Michael deRoos B.Sc. and Michi Main M.Sc. discuss their work in restoring whale skeletons for museum exhibits. Their talk with focus on Orca’s and their recent adventures in Australia. Cetacea has elevated the science of marine and terrestrial skeleton articulation to artistic process. Using the finest quality craftsmanship, Cetacea excels in its field creating exhibits that capture subjects as they would be found in the natural world. Projects are meticulously managed from start to finish so that each skeleton is precisely articulated and entirely unique. Exhibit runs from 10-5pm that day.
