This exhibition brings together imaginative artists with diverse developmental disabilities to share their unique perspectives on the ocean and its profound impact on their lives.
The artists channeled their creativity through a variety of mediums, fueled by their passion, research, and personal interests. From ferry rides that evoke memories of joyous adventures, to encounters with charismatic sea creatures such as seals, otters, and even elusive whales, each artist's perspective is a testament to the diverse and vibrant marine life that thrives along Vancouver's coastline.
Karolina Wera, one of the passionate artists from the collective, encapsulates the urgency of environmental protection, stating, "The coral reef is dying and we need to protect it. I wanted to create a painting that shows that."
Tina Parris, another talented artist, dreams aloud, "I want to swim like a mermaid, that makes me happy."
The importance of The Sea and Me lies in its innovative use of materials. The artists embrace the power of recycled materials as a valid medium for artistic expression, showcasing the potential of repurposing discarded plastic and other materials to portray the beauty of creatures, plants, and the environment. In an era of increasing concern about environmental impact and waste, this exhibition serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to reshape our relationship with the planet. The exhibition also features a collaborative effort where the artists have come together to create remarkable sea creatures using recycled materials. This collective endeavor underscores the importance of preserving our natural landscapes and reinforces the message that every individual plays a crucial role in protecting our oceans and planet.
