CAPS, "And the Winners Are," 2022
Red Deer Arts Council and Red Deer Public Library are pleased to present And The Winners Are: Photographs by Central Alberta Photographic Society (CAPS), which runs in the Kiwanis Gallery from June 28 to August 21, 2022.
First Friday reception August 5th from 5:30 – 7:30pm. Refreshments served. Members of CAPS will be in attendance to talk to you about their work and perhaps give you tips on taking good photographs!
Rolling down the highway, on vacation or simply enjoying a family get-together, the camera is ever always around their necks!
The central focus of this body of work is the twice-yearly competitions held by CAPS in the spring and fall of each year. Each of the images was a winner in one or more categories in those competitions. The competitions are segmented into open and novice levels and the categories are: Human Study, Non-human Living Study, Land/Sea/Cityscape, Action/Sports, Macro/Close-up, Composite Images, President’s Choice and Doug Corrigan Nature/Landscape photography.
The appeal of photography in its various forms is an integral part of society and needs no explanation as to its value as an art form or a communication tool. Most people own cameras: some wish to become more proficient in their use, or to form friendships with others who share their hobby. The Central Alberta Photographic Society (CAPS) provides a venue and various activities to meet those needs.
About CAPS:
CAPS is made up of individuals from all walks of life and all skill levels. They share their knowledge, techniques and experiences in a social atmosphere that helps members express themselves through their photography. The works capture images taken during workshops or out and about. What has captured the imaginations of the members that brings their world closer to you?
Their members include a wide range of ages, cultures and professions, showing how interest in photography is not limited to any one segment of the residents of Red Deer and its surrounding communities. The members benefit in several ways:
- • They improve their skills in photography as an art form;
- • They acquire technical knowledge regarding the capture of their images using the newest cameras and hardware;
- • They learn computer skills to help them optimize the impact and/or the artistry of their images;
- • They share camaraderie (as well as camera-derie) in a social group.
- The community benefits through:
- • Volunteer photography provided by club members to non-profit societies
- • Courses in photography which community citizens can attend
