River like a snake is an exhibition of prints made from enlarged scans of overpainted photographs. The pieces in the exhibition are a selection from an ongoing body of work that acts as a meditation on place and self. What does river logic look like? Does it sound like a snake song? River songs have a special kind of meaning.

The works respond to processes of alluvial erosion and land-forming that the artist has observed near Whitman Dam. Pinheiro’s gestural abstractions allude to these phenomena: sand and clay yielding to the changing flow of the river; seasonal ox-bows turning to swamps; trees being uprooted by the water and replaced downstream.

Andrea Pinheiro is a visual artist working in print, mixed media, and installation. She studied at White Mountain Academy of the Arts in Elliott Lake, Ontario and received her BFA and MFA at the University of Alberta. She has exhibited across Canada and internationally, and has produced numerous artist publications including Bomb Book (2013), published by Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver, BC. From 2008 until 2011, Pinheiro oversaw programming at Malaspina Printmakers in Vancouver. She is currently Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
