Gallery 881 is pleased to present Crossover, a deeply evocative solo exhibition of new photographic work by Canadian-Australian artist Andrew Latreille. The show features large-scale editioned prints, a physical installation, and an audiovisual display from his latest body of work. This installation challenges our historical perception of forest fires by removing the blaze from its expected context. Instead of chaos and heat, Latreille captures the haunting beauty of post-burn landscapes under the reflected light of a subzero winter full moon. The result is a quiet yet powerful visual essay on climate, perception, and transformation.
With this body of work, Latreille reflects on a century of fire suppression and its consequences: fuel-laden forests that now burn hotter and longer. Rather than dramatizing disaster, he invites us to consider fire’s connection to our land, its cultural and historical context along with its regenerative potential. His nocturnal photographs resonate with feelings of awe, fear, peace, and astonishment—reminders that fire, once respected by Indigenous land stewards, can again become a force of renewal.
Latreille’s approach reconsiders photography as more than a record of a single moment. By working in winter, months after the fires have passed, and under the soft reflected light of a full moon, he constructs a liminal space—between destruction and recovery, memory and future. These landscapes are not captured in the moment of crisis, but in the quiet that follows, inviting reflection and reframing.
