Annual Charity Bentwood Boxes
This is the twelfth year of Lattimer Gallery’s Annual Charity Bentwood Boxes event. What started out as a spontaneous idea to sell a few boxes for donated funds back in 2006 has turned into a major fundraising event that has raised over $375,000.00 CAD for local First Nations organizations. Our annual event begins with Métis/Cree artist James Michels creating the blank steam-bent boxes, then various Northwest Coast First Nations artists contribute their creativity, and then Lattimer Gallery donates the promotion and venue for the event. Seven years ago, we were pleased to announce a partnership with the Urban Native Youth Association, a Vancouver organization which has been providing 21 prevention-focused programs and services to Native youth since 1988. We now assign 100% of all donations from our charity auctions to UNYA. Last year, we raised $94,800.00 CAD and every penny went to UNYA.
Between November 17th and December 1st, you will have the chance to bid on these one-of-a-kind pieces via phone, email, or in person. Bids start at $200.00 CAD and go up from there in increments of $100.00 CAD. The boxes can be viewed on our website with their current accompanying bids starting on the 17th. Participating artists include Corey Bulpitt (Haida), Phil Gray (Tsimshian/Cree), Dean Hunt (Heiltsuk), James Michels (Métis/Cree), Steve Smith (Kwakwaka’wakw), and Don Yeomans (Haida), among others. From a pod of whales to a bending bentwood box to an epic cityscape, the boxes this year are shaping up to be amongst the most creative to date!
We invite you to take part in our exciting charity event. Please join us for a reception concluding the final evening of bidding, December 1st, from 5pm to 8pm. The boxes will be on display and participating artists for our annual charity event will be in attendance. In addition, we will donate 10% of sales made across all three of our locations on December 1st to UNYA.
