call for proposals
Open Space is now accepting artist proposals for summer 2019's MAKE/SPACE Mural Project! The deadline for proposals is July 16th, 2019.
With the generous assistance of the City of Victoria's My Great Neighbourhood Grant, Open Space is excited to present MAKE/SPACE, an exciting opportunity for artists to engage with larger scale questions of heritage, placement, and in/visibility within the community of Victoria.
We are issuing an open call for emerging artists to submit individual OR group proposals to create an original mural piece on the back wall of Open Space, facing Helmcken Alley.
The space in question is located on the unceded territories of the Lekwungen people, known also as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. Open Space respectfully acknowledges our placement on these lands, and we seek to honour and uphold ongoing relationships to these territories and peoples while examining our own complicity in ongoing colonization within the social construct of Canada.
We are in search of proposals submitted by artists with a personal understanding of their self-location in regards to these territories and the histories of displacement and colonialism that have taken place. The proposal selection and notification of the artist will take place in late July, and the installation of the mural will take place in early to mid August (proposed dates August 6-13th).
We encourage applications from artists who self-identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, disabled or living with disability, or as a member of an otherwise marginalized community. We welcome group proposals, although artist teams will share the total commission awarded. Previous mural experience is not required. The deadline for proposals is July 16th, 2019.
