UP CLOSE & PERSONAL
April 27th between 2 to 4pm Join us for an entertaining afternoon to engage with artist Maynard Johnny Jr. (Kwakwaka'wakw/Coast Salish) while he creates one of his latest new works.
In recollecting his earlier years, Maynard remembers how he came to the pivotal moment when he found his artistic calling.
“My mom says I started drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil'; she said, ‘why don’t you try and do something from your culture’” he recalls. “Basically from that point on, I focused on that.”
As his career gained momentum, Maynard was asked to create the design on a cedar box for the 2009 Canadian Juno Music Awards. “It was given to all the people who participated in the Juno Awards – the presenters [and] the nominees”
Maynard shares the inspiration for pursuing his passion: "I have had the privilege of learning stories from my elders, stories that have been with my people for thousands of years. My way of sharing these stories is through my art."
