Goota Ashoona is a third generation, female Inuit artist from Cape Dorset. She is the daughter of Kuigak Ashoona and granddaughter of Pitseolak Ashoona. Along with her Winnipeg born husband and twin sons, they run Ashoona Studios, currently operating in Elie, Manitoba (pop 550). Their WAG@The Forks work is being presented in partnership with Nunavut Development Corporation.
“Ashoona Studios: The Art and The Stories,” features carvings and textiles by Goota, Bob, and Joe Jaw. Produced both individually and collaboratively, their work is part autobiographical and part historical, detailing stories from their family life. The exhibit also includes works on paper by various Cape Dorset artists including Ningiukulu Teevee, Goota's cousin. Teevee’s work is currently on view at WAG@ The Park.
