For the show BALANCE Dana experiments with the layers, transparency and with finding the BALANCE. Some pieces are on canvas, others on silk and some are the artwear. In several pieces it is the colors that help her to achieve her aim, in others she also utilizes several layers of her transparent painted silks as collage materials and paints with the acrylics under, over and in between the layers. For more BALANCE Dana mixes gestural and graphic shapes; this to her symbolizes the ever-present nature versus culture.
We all need some BALANCE in our life. Dana loves speed, drama, taking risks, and being in the wild places in nature, which is for her always stimulating and inspiring. But then, when she is in her studio, she loves to concentrate, meditate and totally immerse herself in something that seams endless. Is it hunger for BALANCE? Sometimes she starts to paint over the finished painting and hopes that it will never be finished; maybe it's like reading a good book and wanting to stay with it forever... There are times to take it easy, to be at piece, to be patient, to be introspective, slow, calm, still and to pay absolute attention.

Dana believes to be aiming for BALANCE not only in life but in every new art piece. She usually starts her design concept with some idea of BALANCE, but soon the outcome is changed to spontaneous shapes and marks. When she is satisfied with the wild and free part, she will study the painting for several days and carry it around the house to places with different light and mood; she literally eats and sleeps with it and is trying to feel the balance. At this stage Dana decides where to add not so spontaneous colours, shapes and marks to finish the painting.
Dana likes that the abstract paintings tempt people to perceive art with their hearts rather than with their brains, even though often there is a unique narrative to think about.
Dana will be in the gallery for the duration of the show, every day from 10-5. On Sunday October 2nd at 4pm Dana will have a speech.
Dana Roman has a master’s degree in architecture from Prague. In the last 16 years Dana exhibited her work at 15 solo shows and numerous juried group shows and won the awards for her art locally, nationally and internationally.
