Paul Kuhn Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Calgary artist, Barbara Milne. The show titled “Responding to the Collection at The Whyte Museum” is an exhibition which was held at The Whyte Museum in Banff from October 2016 through January 2017.
This exhibition which includes paintings, drawings and collages, continues and expands the artists’ vision beyond landscape to include the intimacy of interior spaces and still life. The exhibition took three years to produce and reflects Milne’s response to the collection of the Whyte Museum in Banff, specifically the contents and structure of a 1931 log cabin designed and lived in by fellow artists, Catherine and Peter Whyte.
In Milne’s self directed residency, she was assisted by museum curators Anne Ewen and Pam Knott, who introduced the artist to the hundreds of objects amassed by the couple. Each object was carefully examined and documented by the artist. Resonating most powerful to Milne were the objects that poignantly embodied their owners while simultaneously opening portals to multiple narratives. The valuable collections and personal mementos within the cabin provided a rich trove for Milne to map links between association and memory, beauty and monetary value in relation to sentiment.
The exhibition at Paul Kuhn Gallery represents a broad selection from the museum show. The artist will attend the opening and give a brief talk at 3:00 PM April 8, 2017A 32 page catalogue is available.
