Emily Neufeld, "Before Demolition," 2018
installation view
Opening Reception: Friday, March 23, 2018, 6-8 P.M
Before Demolition examines the link between a person’s identity and their location. Using homes slated for demolition, Neufeld performs interventions in the space dictated by the physical marks and patterns -- wear patterns in carpet, cut marks on the counter – that residents inadvertently left behind while living there. The resulting large-scale sculptures are documented and the homes surrendered to developers to be demolished, only to be remembered in photographs. The exhibition explores our complex relationship with the built environment, private property and land ownership with particular focus on contemporary issues including the rising cost of accommodation and increased homelessness.
Emily Neufeld received her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2013, and has exhibited throughout BC and Alberta.
