Neck Uh the Wood
Bennie Allain
with assistance from Jared Klok
An immersive installation of new paintings and sculptures that draw inspiration from sources found in the shadows of rural culture: country-style “Primitive” craftwork; inspirational quote posters and signs; homemade shrines and back room spiritualist performances; hockey culture and other forms of frail and obvious Canadiana; and tole-painted woodcrafts.
Neck Uh the Wood is part of an ongoing project about memories, myth and storytelling. Objects are chosen from landfills, thrift stores and other palaces of memory. Stories are recalled and rewritten into each other.
Most of the objects for Neck Uh the Wood were provided by Dawsonites directly or via the Quigley landfill.
Some of the stories for this project were provided by Wayne and Christine Allain (Summerside, PE) and Jim McArthur (Halifax, NS) and theirs are the voices you can hear.
