Billy McCarroll was born and educated in California, receiving his MA in Visual Arts at the University of California (Humboldt) in 1969. An excellent golfer, Billy attended university on a golf scholarship, but his desires lay in the world of art. After graduating from the MA program, and with his family in tow, he headed for Canada as he was offered a professorship in the art department at the University of Lethbridge in 1971. Billy taught for almost 30 years at the University of Lethbridge and was granted the status of 'Professor Emeritus' in 2000 to present day.
With his love of golf, Billy McCarroll began appropriating images from the book “Sam Snead's Natural Golf” as the focus of his paintings, prints and drawings – and has continued to do so for over 30 years. His use of stylized shapes, thick black outlines and vibrant colour palette often cause McCarroll's work to be categorized as Pop Art, referencing figurative art of the 1960s that drew on advertising imagery.
Much of the critical response to McCarroll's work has made a link between his subject matter and a philosophical life approach. The challenges inherent in the game of golf are often presented as metaphors for the wins and losses we face in contemporary life.
