Blake Chorley & Ben Globerman, "Aura of The Land," 2018

Opening Reception – May 5, 12-2pm – Both artists will be in attendance.

McMullen Gallery presents Aura of the Land, featuring Ambrotype photograph-based work by Blake Chorley (Calgary) and 5-Channel digital sound installation by Ben Globerman (Ottawa). Both artists have opened their creative practice to elements of nature; to see, hear and experience its gifts.

Chorley’s photographs depict pristine landscapes in national and provincial parks in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. Starting with a digital capture, he works backwards in his processes; first editing the images on the computer, separating the layers, transferring them to film, and finally printing the foreground and background of each image on two different glass plates using the Ambrotype process from the 1850’s.

Utilizing field recordings, textural compositions, and particular frequencies, Globerman’s multi-speaker audio installation, Between Mountains and Brooks, evokes the feelings of wonderment, harmony, and peace created by expansive outdoor spaces. Sounds emanate from the periphery, allowing visitors to sit or stand in the centre and be surrounded by sounds of fields and forests on one side, and rivers and streams on the other.
