Blake Senini, "Dear Nevermore," 2019
Opening Reception Saturday, March 23rd from 2 to 5 pm.
Artist in Attendance.
Light and photography, with their peculiar characteristics and relationships to form, have always been of particular interest to Blake’s studio practice and research. There is an intention in his works to invite the viewer to participate in a kind of narrative and to remind themselves of their own capacities to interpret images presented to them. Just as one understands a photograph, a film, a book, or a work of art, we all have our own ideas and meanings distilled from the images presented to us in our daily lives and our own responses to them. As an artist, Blake guides people to make their own interpretations and conclusions towards an understanding and it is precisely this autonomy that is of the upmost interest to Blake and his sculpture practice. In the end the viewer has the power to decide what his work means and its relationships, if any, to their own experiences.
Blake Senini is one of Alberta’s most highly regarded sculptors. Blake was born in 1954 on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria in Sculpture in 1975 and his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary in 1981. Blake is the recipient of numerous awards and has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally, for over 40 years. Blake lives and works in Calgary, Alberta and is a Professor Emeritus of the Sculpture Department at the Alberta College of Art and Design.
