The Avenue Gallery is pleased to present Blu Smith’s fourth solo exhibition, The Path of Least Resistance. Blu Smith’s abstract paintings play with light, colour and form - channeling new and powerful perspectives. Internationally acclaimed and having recently shown in New York, Miami and Los Angeles, Blu’s artistic reputation is growing exponentially.
Blu Smith was born in Kamloops in 1968 and grew up in Vernon. As a young man he moved to Victoria and completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Victoria in 1993. His mature style as an abstract painter began as an exercise to free himself from the technical constraints of realism. Nonrepresentational abstraction became a creatively freeing direction that evolved into his unique voice as an artist.
“My work has a strong base in colour and composition. My pieces are constructed or built as if bricks and mortar in a building. Every painting is a building block in the foundation of what will come next.”
His early influences included the abstract expressionists of the New York School, most notably Willem De Kooning, Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell. Now in Victoria, Blu exhibits his work worldwide, and we are thrilled to be his home gallery.
