to
Pendulum Gallery 885 W Georgia St, Vancouver, British Columbia V6C 3E8
Opening Event : Thursday August 10, 6-8 pm
Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From Led Zeppelin to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to James Brown; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; John Lennon to Johnny Rotten, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition for their power and intimacy. Rockers illuminates the atmosphere and spirit of these musicians, made possible by Gruen’s close friendship and respect for the artists he works with, and his deep involvement with the music of his time. His wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory provide one of the most insightful and comprehensive histories of rock youth culture ever made.
For many years Gruen was the official photographer for the New York New Music Seminar, covering dozens of aspiring new bands in the course of a summer week. As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the ’70s, he specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. Gruen toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie. The exhibition at Pendulum Gallery presents photographs selected from his retrospective exhibition Rockers, originally curated for the Museu de Arte Brasileira in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2007, and which has toured to other cities since that time, including an exhibition at the former CBGB space in NYC in 2012 .A catalogue of the exhibition has been published in Portuguese and English by Cosac & Naify Edições Ltda of Sao Paulo.
