Cat Sharp, "Birchbark and Blue," 2020
ink, birch bark, acrylic, thread on paper
Cat Sharp is a mixed media artist whose recent project, Cleave, embodies themes of connection and identity. Sharp explores her Denésułiné heritage through incorporating culturally significant imagery into collage-like works on paper, along with materials like leather and fur processed by family members. Through assemblages of twisted branches that are physically taken apart and put back together, Sharp makes reference to a brain injury she suffered in 2011. Using thread, strung between these artworks and across the exhibition space, Sharp physically draws connections between aspects of her identity, creating a compelling installation centered around self reflection.
This project has been developed with the support of First Peoples Cultural Council.
