CKG is pleased to announce our fifth solo exhibition of new work by Calgary artist CHRIS KUZMANOVICH. The pandemic has enticed artists to embrace of a much brighter palette, and Chris has also unabashedly dove head-first into a bold palette, replacing black with more vibrant hues. Thick surface layers are scraped and incised, revealing lush underpainting, and again, more bold colour.
Additionally, each of the paintings in track seven is in homage to a song that is of importance to Kuzmanovich - his personal soundtrack, so to speak.
The premise for the show developed out of a pop-culture reference Kuzmanovich often uses to describe “filler” — initially believing track seven on an album to be the throw away song, the in-between, the fluff; neither the perceived “hit” the artist wanted to lead with or the formative melody they wanted to end on.
But then he discovered that just wasn’t the case. These tracks were transitional and influential.
With nods to Fleetwood Mac, Michael Franti, and Wille Nelson, Kuzmanovich’s track sevens became anthems to his creative practice over the last year, not to mention one fantastic playlist to enjoy when viewing this body of bold, graphic new work.
CHRIS KUZMANOVICH is a Calgary-based creative originally from the Northwest Territories. He studied interior design at Mount Royal College and worked within this field for several years before establishing his own design firm, CVK, in 2007. His work in design naturally led to his pursuit of art when he began painting as a self-reflexive practice over fifteen years ago.
