How does the internet “see” Death? What about Life?
If you could take any concept and distill it to one colour, what would that look like? Chroma Chamber is an interactive new media art installation from Vancouver based artist JG Mair that investigates such questions. Real-time Google image results are collated by programming to surround the viewer with the distilled colour of the words they speak. Driven entirely by open-source custom software written with Canadian programmer Bill Pettigrew, this installation taps programmers, designers, and musicians to create an immersive experience of color, light, and voice-user interface. To enter Chroma Chamber is to pass the threshold between human expectations of vision and machine algorithms. From within this space, one can witness a live harvesting of the internet’s collective intelligence.
JG Mair is a Vancouver-based multidisciplinary visual artist, working in the areas of mixed media and new media art. His practice explores the pluralities of perception as manifested through both material and digital manipulation. Mair holds a BFA from the University of Victoria and a BEd from the University of British Columbia. His work has been exhibited in Canada, USA, South Korea and Japan.
