Cindy Mochizuki, "dawn to dust," Invitation
Join us at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art on Friday, May 12, 2017, 6-8 P.M. for the opening of Vancouver artist Cindy Mochizuki’s dawn to dust.
dawn to dust examines the effects of war and the unreliability of memory. It is based on Mochizuki’s father’s experiences in Japan following the release of Japanese Canadians from the internment camps of B.C. in 1949. The installation includes audio, animations, video and sculpture created from interviews and various archives to create moving images and optical illusions that appear to have both realistic and magical elements. The resulting exhibition examines recollections of place and home through a lense of history and exile.
Mochizuki’s short films have been screened in Hungary, Holland, Korea, Toronto, Los Angeles and Montreal. Recent exhibitions and projects include: Shako Club, grunt gallery (2015), AIR Yonago (2014), Fictive Communities Asia, Koganecho Bazaar (2014), On the Subject of Ghosts, Hamilton Artists Inc (2013), Yokai & Other Spirits, Toronto Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (2013), and To|From BC Electric Railway 100 Years, Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (2012).
She has received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the School For Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University.
This event is free and open to the public.
